Notonthesamepage sizzles in workout

Notonthesamepage(Catienus) sizzled five furlongs in 59:40 with jockey Elvis Trujillo. He worked with a gelding Osceola Prince who clocked :59 2/5.

"Right after his last race we set out a plan," Ward, his trainer said. "We set out a schedule of workouts and I sent him out with the same horse every time. I know how fast that horse (Osceola Prince) can go and we've been working on sitting just off him. Elvis has been great at catching him right at the wire every time."
In light of his next start Ward has been trying to get him to relax.
"Usually he shoots right to the front," the trainer said. "Obviously, if they go something crazy, we might not be up there. We've been breezing him hoping he can learn to adapt, but he's been trained his whole life to run on the lead. I would expect that's probably what will happen again."

Old fashioned remains unbeaten

http://www.ntra.com/video.aspx?id=37858

Old fashioned(Unbridled's song) remained unbeaten today from four career starts when he won the one mile Southwest stakes. He tracked Silver city then bursted to win by 3 1/4 lengths over Silver city. Buzzin and dreamin was 3rd whle Flat out was fourth. Silver city gamely tried to fight back. Old fashioned finished the race in 1:37 2/5 on a fast dirt track.

Wooohooooo!!!!!! I'm so happy that he won. Can you tell? I'm telling you, theres something about this horse that is so likeable. Maybe I'm jumping the gun but I think he could do it. By "it" I mean win the Derby. Well there is lots of time to decide so I'll not be picking him yet but, he is getting there.

Evita Argentina(Candy ride) beat the boys today in the San Vicente. She was far back in the stretch but rallied to win. She became the 3rd filly to win the 7 furlong race and the 1st since 1947. Though, the one turn filly doesn't hold 2 turn ambitions.

Clash in Southwest

Old fashioned and Silver city, the top two contendors for the Southwest Stakes, will face off Monday. They have much in common such as being athletically built colts with quickness of foot. Natural speed from sprinters close up in their pedigrees also is true for both grays. They also share the same sire Unbridled's song. This gives them an advantage over the other horses. Nimble horses, like them tend to do better at Oaklawn because it allows them to get over the surface unlike taller, heavier horses that would sink into the surface. Smarty Jones and Lawyer Ron swept the Rebel, Southwest and Arkansas Derby, while Afleet Alex won the Mountain Valley and Arkansas Derby."He's a horse that's very light on his feet and he's just got a very efficient way of going," Jones said of Old Fashioned. "He's what you always look for in a horse, and that you can't just get because nothing is 100 percent scientific on breeding. This is what you hope to get a horse that's got this speed and got the distance capabilities that he showed at 2 in the Remsen."

Stardom Bound's connections announced that she will be targeting the Santa Anita Oaks and Derby. “What [Frankel] feels is that he needs another real good race in her before he feels comfortable enough that she could fire her best shot,” said Iavarone. “She went into the race very fresh and she came out of it very fresh, so I’m not going to question Bobby in that regard.”

Four weeks seperate the two premier races at Santa Anita. Iavarone was afraid of "squeezing the lemon" but Frankel says "the lemon hasn't even been juiced."

In other filly related news, Evita Argentina(Candy Ride) is looking to make history in the $150,000 San Vincente Stakes. Other colts entered into the race include, Gallant son, Congor Bay, Point Attended, Cut the Check, Ventana. Wall street Wonder, Gato go win, Leadstheway, and Smokey Lonesome.

Have a great day everyone!

Desert party has party

Desert Party(Street Cry) won the UAE Guineas today over his stablemate Vineyard haven. He swept past Vineyard haven and Regal Ransom to win by 4 1/2 lengths under Frankie Dettori. Vineyard haven raced gamely but faded in midstretch to finish fourth, beat 6 1/2 lengths. Desert Party ran the 7.96 furlong race in 1:37.62.

Break water edison worked five furlongs in 1:00 on a fast dirt track at Gulfstream. He is looking to improve and redeem himself after a last place finish in the Hutcheson Stakes."Besides the bad performance, everything has gone fine," Kimmel said. "He looks well. He's trained well. He just didn't run well. I thought today's breeze was great. I really liked the last quarter," Kimmel said. "He even had to go wide at one point because the two of them came up on another horse, and Georgie had to take him pretty well out there on the track." The Fountain of Youth will be his next race. He was worked in company with four year old Freedom Bay.

Trainer Larry Jones was pleased with the last work from Old fashioned. Here's what he had to say about the gray colt.
"He's ready to go," Jones reported. "He acted like there was nothing to it. He came back to the barn and barely was blowing and didn't drink but a gallon of water.
We will gallop a mile or mile and a half on Friday, and then Saturday and Sunday give him an easy five-eighths gallop," he added. "We are excited and ready. Old Fashioned is a neat horse. It's hard not to love him. Bringing him up here from Fair Grounds it was just me and him, it was bonding time. It was like I will focus on you, and you will focus on me."

Have a great night everyone!

Vineyard haven entered into UAE Guineas

Vineyard Haven(Lido palace) was entered into Thursday's Two thousand Guineas at Nad al Sheba. The one mile race is the first start for the colt since being bought by Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum. Other horses entered include Desert Party, Regal Ransom, Blues and Rock, Rocksoff, Naval officer, and Jose Adan. Vineyard haven, Desert Party, Regal Ransom, Jose Adan and City style are nominated to the Triple Crown. Meanwhile Midshipman is expected to make his debut in the March 5 Al Bastalkiya. No disrespect but, I do think running Midshipman and,Vineyard Haven in Dubai for their preps for the Derby is a bad idea. It hasn't worked before so I don't see how this year is any different. Just keep the horses in the United States. It makes sense if you ask me.

Fabulous filly foils foes

Stardom Bound(Tapit) easily won the $300,000 Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita today. She now could be headed to the Santa Anita Derby against the boys on April 4th. After getting boxed in on the backstretch, and trapped behind a wall of horses she still powered to a 1 1/4 length win in 1:36.43 for the mile race, in last to first style. Her jockey, Mike Smith had no problem with the traffic trouble."I was trying to slow her down going down the backside and get her to relax. She hadn't run in six months, so she was wanting to go,” Smith said. “I wasn't concerned around the turn when I was boxed in. I was actually glad to be bottled up really, because I didn't want to ask her to run too early. I figured if I stayed stuck, something would probably open up by the eighth pole. She accelerates so good, it's amazing. She's a dream to ride."
On the sythetic Pro-ride surface she earned her 4th grade 1 win. Her new owner, IEAH stables had this to say about her possible next career start in the Santa Anita Derby.
"I don't see why she wouldn't go on. I don't know what else she has to prove against the girls,” Iavarone said. “I'll talk it over with [trainer] Bobby [Frankel], but I think that's what we want. I think that's what racing wants.”
I just have to say this filly just keep getting better in my eyes. She is just as good, if not better, than most of the colts this season. A very impressive win. Stardom Bound is out of the mare My White Corvette.

Friesian Fire(A.P. Indy) was able to cinch his win in the $200,000 Risen Star (G3) at Fair Grounds today as well. He gained the lead on the final turn three wide, and stretched to a 2 length win lead. The Risen star was the first start at 1 1/16 miles for the colt. Ridden by Gabriel Saez he won in 1:45.11 on a fast main track. (Go Larry Jones! He's having a great season and deserves to have one too. He's had a bunch of crap thrown his way just because of the Eight Belles incident.) Flying Pegasus finished second, third place finisher was Uno mas. Friesian fire is out the mare Bollinger(Dehere)

Meanwhile, Beethoven(Sky mesa) was back on the track today, one week after his fourth place finish in the Holy Bull. He breezed an easy five furlongs and the Fountain of Youth seems like a possible next start for the colt.

Pioneerofthenile(Empire Maker) won the Robert B. Lewis under Garret Gomez in the final sixteenth explosion. He went the 1 1/16 miles race in 1:41 1/5 and made himself California's leading Kentucky Derby hopeful.

Have a nice night everyone

Square eddie out

Square Eddie(Smart Strike) will be sidelined for at least 30 days due to a sore left foreleg shin that was discovered after a five furlong work in :58.80. This injury could keep the chestnut colt from competing on the Triple Crown trail. His owner and trainer are holding out hope that Square Eddie can recover fully in time to make the Kentucky Derby. This is what his trainer said about it.“The horse is sound. He’s just slightly sore to that left shin,” said trainer Doug O’Neill. “We’re addressing it and doing what’s in his best interests. We’re going to do some therapy on it and see where we are in 30 days.”
O'Neill says he will not run the colt if he isn't 100%.
Okay, first Saratoga sinner now this! The Derby trail isn't starting off so well. Also notice that it's the same leg as Saratoga sinner. Coincidental don't you think?

In other news, Patena will be headed to the Louisana Derby for his next start. The Louisana Derby is held at Fair Grounds on March 14 and is 1 1/16 miles.

He seemed to enjoy his first trip around Oaklawn's oval. Jones is planning one more work for this gray colt prior to the Southwest Stakes. He is also planning the go the same path as Smarty Jones. The Rebel Stakes on March 14, and the Arkansas Derby on April 11. I'm so excited about this colt's 2009 debut! I think he'll rock the competitions socks off!

Saratoga sinner injured

Saratoga sinner(Harlan's Holiday) was found out to have a bone chip in his left knee off his victory in the Holy Bull stakes last Saturday. He earned a 96 Beyer speed figure for his win in the Holy Bull. Saratoga sinner will be leaving for Kentucky and have surgery. His trainer had this to say. "He has a lot of things that you look for as a three-year-old at this time of year. I think he could have continued on and improved enough to be a force in the Florida Derby [G1],” Kenneally said. “Certainly, he showed a lot of what you want to see in a young horse at this time of year. It’s just bad timing, but he will come back and hopefully we can start again.”
“He was a major improving horse, which is what you need this time of year,” Kenneally said. “I knew that when I stretched him out he was going to be a nice horse. And sure enough, when I stretched him out in his first start he ran a huge race, and then he followed up with another big race."
Kenneally has said he should be back for a late summer and fall campaign with the injury not being career threatening.

Beethoven's trainer happy

Beethoven(Sky Mesa) is doing well after his fourth place finish in the Holy Bull stakes yesterday at Gulfstream Park. His trainer, John Ward was satisfied with his placing.

"He's bright and happy this morning." Ward said. "He lost by exactly the amount of lengths you would expect when you start in the outside post while giving up weight to the winner(8 lbs.). It was a learning experience. Considering that, I'd have to say I'm satisfied with his performance."

Beethoven carried 122 lbs from post ten with a relatively short run to the first turn, on a track not favoring the outside post positions. The Fountain of Youth is a possibility and he should have no problem cutting back to a one turn race. Ward has no motivation to take him out of town, he wants to see his horse's muscle development improve.
